WHO
Mark Walters has been penning The Ordinary Guy column as a regular contributor to Concealed Carry Magazine for over 5 years. As a freelance writer for a local industrial trade publication and a vocal second amendment activist in Tampa, Florida, Mark’s letters and opinions appeared many times in the Tampa Tribune. His book, Lessons From Armed America, co-written with Kathy Jackson ( forward by Massad Ayoob), was released in October 2009 by Whitefeather Press and highlights the stories of those who found found themselves the victims of violent crime and either used a gun or wished they had one when they needed it most, including his own story.
In November of 2002 just two weeks after the birth of his daughter Lindsey, Mark found himself the intended victim of an attempted carjacking while approaching a traffic light on E. Fletcher Ave. in the Suitcase City section of Tampa, FL at 6:20 am on his way to work. A well known drug and crime infested area bordering the University of South Florida, Mark passed through the area every day. Luckily on that November morning he was carrying a Glock 36, 45 caliber handgun resting in a Sidearmor Kydex IWB holster. When the criminals… both of them…found themselves unable to get into the vehicle stopped just off of his left bumper, they turned their attention to him.
Watching the frightening events unfold in front of him and happening at a frantic pace, Mark un-holstered his weapon and leveled his 45 at the criminal standing just feet away from him and approaching his vehicle. When confronted with a gun pointed directly at his chest, the closest attacker waved off his partner and both men retreated to their vehicle. Fleeing like the cowards they were, Mark was able to make it home alive that day.
That frightening experience became the subject of his first column with Concealed Carry Magazine titled “The Importance of Carrying Your Gun 100% of The Time”, now listed as one of Concealed Carry Magazines “Best of”.
Since that time, Mark writes about ordinary folks like you and I who have used a weapon to defend themselves as well as interviewing some of the nations biggest news makers and activists. The list includes rock stars, country singers, radio personalities, national and local politicians, TV stars, internationally recognized trainers, weapons experts, criminal psychologists, television hosts, authors, real people who have used a firearm to defend themselves against violent attack and regular, ordinary folks who make a difference.
Mark was one of the headline speakers at the Second Amendment March in Washington, DC on April 19th, 2010 joining other guests such as Suzanna Hupp, Sheriff Mack, Dick Heller, Mancow, and others who proudly proclaimed the birthright of every American to keep and bear arms. He has appeared numerous times as a guest on local and national radio shows including a co-hosting appearance on the nationally syndicated G. Gordon Liddy show. In addition, Mark was a recent guest on Fox Businees Channel’s The Stossel Show, with John Stossel to discuss the topic of More Guns, Less Crime and appears weekly as a guest on the popular live web TV program, American Trigger Sports Network with host James Towle to discuss the right to self-defense every Wednesday afternoon at www.atsn.tv.
Mark is a member of the NRA, an NRA Certified Instructor in three disciplines, a member of the National Shooting Sports Foundation as well as a card carrying member of GeorgiaCarry.org, the Gun Owners of America and a vocal 2nd amendment activist. In the spare time of his “real life,” he ran his own successful business for over 13 years and now works full time to bring you Armed American Radio.
He also believes that anyone who has been suckered by Al Gore is, well….a sucker.
Mark defends our freedoms on AAR with the RIGHT voice at the RIGHT time and brings a frank discussion of the right to defend your life to FREEDOM loving Americans EVERY week.
WHERE
Armed American Radio is broadcast live to the nation from the AAR studio at Talk 920 WGKA in Atlanta, Georgia.
WHY
Because our freedoms are at stake and because we can. We are now faced with the most ANTI-FREEDOM, GUN HATING, SOCIALIST-DRIVEN administration and agenda in our nation’s history. The timing for this program is no coincidence. Patriotic Americans are needed to stand up and defend our Constitutional rights now more than ever. The onslaught of gun-haters who want to take away your freedoms CAN NOT AND WILL NOT GO UNATTENDED BY THE USCCA and Mark Walters.

It would be nice if the promotional codes worded at Midway. I sent them an e-mail..and promise not to complain on facebook..until monday.
Mark Walters,
What do you think?
We have a constitutional right to be able to protect our selfs according to the constitution.
So when we inter a business that is open to the public and have to give up that right because of a no gun sign. Then we should be guaranteed that protection by the business that posted that sign and that business should understand that if we are harmed in there business then we should have the right to compensation for that harm we received. Maybe we need a bill pasted that would guarantees this. Maybe it would change the whole climate towards conceal carry?
I am learning new information every time I look into personal defense methods, action and weapons. Something interesting I bring up in the shooting clinics I attend is: It is important to have a (Winning!) “gun friendly lawyer” in your wallet. If you ever have to use a gun or any weapon to defend ones self. It would be a good reminder to encourage and inform listeners that if one is going to fight off violence with weapons, understand the legal system consequences. You pay insurance for your car, a gun friendly lawyer is your insurance to defend yourself. It going to cost $100,000 for that lawyer, for that much they better WIN!
Where is the ads and campaigns to be a good citizens? where are the commercials on TV to “Be a responsible good neighbor”?
General Washington did not use the freedom of speech to fight off the Tyrannical Red Coats, he used bullets.
Dr. Martin Luther King had great dreams for all American Citizens in the country using the freedom of speech, we celebrate his ideals and memory.
I Like Guns – Steve Lee
Mark and Sean I think you will like this youtube video Steve Lee
I Think he would be fun to have on your show.
I do not know the guy but i love the video and his other songs
Love your show
Steve Evangelist out of San Jose California
While I like the show, I find it very discurraging that you have embraced the likes of Ted Nugent.Recent comments by Ted on programs for the elderly, disabled and the unemployed should be cause for concern.Ted also is not the spokesperson needed to convince the people that are on the fence about gun control.Just because a celeb is pro gun doesn’t make him a good spokesperson. If I was hearing Ted for the first time I don’t think I would become pro gun after hearing him.
Mark:
It was a pleasure meeting you at the NRA Convention. Keep up the great work. In one of the upcoming round tables could you discuss the pros and cons of a single action with a safety vs. a double action as a carry gun. Current carry is a Sig 239. Thinking about a Springfield Armory EMP. If you e-mail me, I can give more details on my reasons. Again great to meet you and Kathy and get your book.
Chuck – from Rocky River, OH and Zelienople, PA. – New Life member of the NRA and member of the USCCA
For reference I introduced you to Jerry – from North Olmsted, OH (my mentor for shooting) We chatted about Pine Elementary.
Thank you Mark for your latest May 2 program. I was smiling and glad to hear the visiting guests from the Armed Citizens Network . To have this legal network guest talking (Marty and Kathy) on how to deal with gun defense situations. I pass on to everyone I meet, how important it is to have gun friendly attorney from the Armed Citizens Network. Bob’s call and response point on calling 911 after a firearms shooting is so great to hear how these situations to be discussed with law enforcement individuals. Marty’s response is something I can stand behind with dealing with calling 911 call after using a gun to defend oneself.
I really have found this radio broadcast, or in my case a podcast, is a great program, keep up the great work.
We hear you loud and clear.
Mark,
Really enjoyed listening and meeting you last year at the Minnesota State Fair. Hope you can make it again.
Love the podcasts. Keep up the fight for our freedoms.
Check out google for the latest Indiana Supreme Court Ruling: They have declared it “legal” for a police officer to force his way into your home, and you have no legal right to resist.
This is as crazy and stupid as it can get; goes against 300 years of legal precedent—and is DAMN likely to get a lot of people killed!
You need to alert the people to this injustice; the 2nd Amendment is important, but the 4th is just as important—as are all of the rest.
I woke up in the morning at 1:30am due to someone kicking our bedroom door open. fortunately, the Grace of God was with us and i had placed a security door stop (Pic) inside our bedroom door and he had problems getting the door open. as he repositioned himself after kicking the door, i reached for the Glock on my night stand. As I chambered a round, swung the gun in the intruders direction, pulled the trigger and shot, he ran down the hallway and left through the sliding glass door. Not knowing if he or more than one had left, i closed the door, reinstalled the door security post and layed on the floor with the intent to shoot through the door anyone whose shoes i seen moving on the other side. He had entered through a kitchen window, gone through our kitchen drawers, living room belongings and placed our laptop computer and Laura’s purse in my backpack; then he came down the hallway to our bedroom. Before coming to our room, he must have thought the house was unoccupied becaused he placed a few items in front of the Front door in the event we came home and started to open the front door, he would hear and run or prepare for confrontation. After the police arrived, they said i should have unloaded the gun on the guy and good work. After helping two girls out of being raped when i was a 19 years old, i realized that even though no-one is after me or my family, it is better to be prepared than live a life of sorrow, pain and grief because someone is killed, raped or both . That is when i bought the door post to give me a few seconds of reaction time. To believe it could not happen to me, is to simply be living in a hope and never, facing the possibility that it could happen. Since most people will not act like a “radical” muslim and pull women and children in front of them to take the bullet, we all need to be prepared to respond but not be parnoid. If nothing else, get a can of Wasp spray, it can shoot 20′ to 27′. I once spoke to a retired, Detroit police department Armorer who said he has seen every bullet size SMALLER than a 357Mag stopped by an article of clothing i.e. jacket, belt buckle…etc. In spite of the intended wickedness and FREE WILL of man (free will was behind 911) to rob or harm us, God made us PREPARED. I believe the hand of God is reflected in this:
1) My gun is ALWAYS on the nightstand will always/ALREADY be loaded, never without a round in the chamber. The fact the intruder heard me chamber a round in my gun let him know to go the other way. This is not necessarily good, he now has a second chance with better preparation.
2) If my gun was already loaded, he would not have heard me load the bullet in the chamber and while he was repositioning himself after the kick, I WOULD HAVE PLUGGED A MINIMUM OF TWO 40 caliber ROUNDS IN HIS CHEST. If he did not go down, I would have IMMEDIATELY assumed a bullet proof vest and shot him in the head. GOD’ grace gave me the wisdon to think ahead and God’s mercy gave that intruder a second chance. If my gun was already loaded with a round, there is no doubt, he would be DEAD, me guiltless before God and the law, my wife not raped and both of us alive.
Remember what Jesus said to Peter just before His crucifiction: Luke 22:36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b]; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” 38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That’s enough!” he (Jesus) replied.
Jesus knows in life there will be threatening issues and to be prepared, but in this instance, Jesus knew he was to die for the sin of the world and told Peter to Put the sword away. Jesus is the Lamb that would be the sacrifice for humanity that through faith and trust in Christ, we would receive eternal life.
Heard last weeks show, 6/27/11. You mentioned something about the criminal mindset and William April. I have been to one of his seminars at a shooting conference and he was amazing. Could you please try and do a show with him and talk about this subject more in-depth. I think the average listener would learn alot.
Groupon Deal Update
Over the last couple months, we have been giving you a heads up on a deal we were going to feature on Groupon. We were going to offer an awesome deal on the permit class. We had signed contracts and a July date set. But at the last minute, Chicago-based Groupon began questioning the deal. First we got word from the local contact, Jack Konys, that part of our deal wasn’t setting well with the “higher-ups”. Ok, fine. So we simply removed that part of the deal. Well, about a week later, Mr. Konys, emailed us back with this update:
“I’ve been fighting my way up the ladder to get Range USA featured because I believe it would be something our Memphis subscribers would love to see. Unfortunately, I was given word today from the very top that Groupon is putting all features related to handguns on hold indefinitely. While I personally see no issue, I have to abide by our directors’ decision. I apologize for taking up your time.”
We then asked for an official comment from Groupon about their policy on firearm related offers and they replied with this:
“The deals sold on Groupon are largely determined by our customers and their feedback. We avoid deals that involve polarizing issues….gun control is a polarizing issue and thus, we avoid related deals. We make a point not to have a public stance on guns, but knowing the interests of our subscriber base, we don’t want to set you up for failure or see your business slandered on our site. Being on Groupon opens the doors for your biggest PR day ever, for better or worse – this is a decision made to protect both you and us.”
Of course, I sent an email back expressing my thoughts on their decision. I have also tried on several occasions to contact Jack Konys’ boss, Regional Director, Doug Kadison, with no luck. If any of you want to contact Mr. Konys or Mr. Kadison to express your disappointment in their decision, they can be reached at 312-662-7588 and 312-242-2023, respectively. But, please remember to be polite and pleasant – they have the right to not run any deal they choose to, and we have the right not to do business with them.
I write this article to inform our customers about the status of the Groupon deal we had been alluding to. I know many of you were looking forward to it and I felt like I needed to explain why it wasn’t going to happen. I don’t endorse the whole boycott thing and I’m certainly not calling for that; I simply want people to be informed about the companies they are spending their hard earned money with. You make up your own mind and do what is best for you and your family.
____________________________________
BUT, let not your heart be troubled! We don’t need Groupon! Range USA is going to do our own promotion. Details to come, but if you know anyone who wants to get their permit, they need to become a “fan” of Range USA on Facebook and watch our website closely. We will be running an amazing promotion soon! You won’t want to miss it!
Hi Mark,
With the remake of the Three Musketeers coming out, I had to dig out my copy of the 1993 Chris O’Donnell/Kiefer Sutherland version. The King make an interesting speech at the end when D’Artagnon is “inducted.” He says: “This world is an uncertain Realm filled with danger. Honor undermined by the pursuit of Power. Freedom sacrificed when the weak are oppressed by this throne. But there are those who oppose these powerful forces. Who dedicate their lives to Truth, Honor, and Freedom. These men are known as Musketeers!” We could easily substitute Musketeers for Marines, Riflemen, or Armed Citizens!
I have tried to download Hour 1 on 5/22/2011, but each time I click the Download link, it tries to play in Quick Time on my Windows system. I noticed that the more recent dates you have, like the broadcasts in June, download as a file should download without opening Quick Time player. How can I download this file? Your help with this would be appreciated. My email address is raystacho@att.net.
Hey Mark, I live in a town northeast of Nashville,Tn(Pleasant View, Tn 37080). We have two major conservative talk stations(airing out of Nashville),99.7 wtn fm and am 1510 wlac. Neither broadcast your great show. There are two ways I listen, 1- AAR.com and the second is Tune-in Radio app. Tune in radio is a radio app for my 4g phone that allows me to listen to national radio shows(talk,rock,country,ect..),basically allows me to listen to a radio stations that may be located in another part of the country. It was by accident I found your show. I would have never of known had it not been for this cell phone app….What can I do in an effort to get your show in Nashville????What can I do to get people aware of your educational show. People in the Middle Tennessee Area need a prescription for freedom. I leave a Facebook posting every Sunday to my FB friends hoping to make them aware of your show…HELP ME….PLEASE…
I am done trying to listen. Tried many ways several times over the last four Sundays. Commercials come in fine but after ten minutes or so no sound. Or, sound has several tracks playing at once. It want more than 20 listeners you need to get into the 21st century.
Steve,
It sounds like you might be having trouble watching the live feed. Forget the live feed. Join the other 2 million AAR listeners by tuning into one of the dozens of stations across the country that carry the show live. Your IP shows a Miami location so the closest station to you is W. Palm, Powertalk 1420 AM. You’ll need to head over to the listen live page and simply click on one of the streaming sites listed…or if you have an iphone or blackberry simply get the Talk 920 app and listen live from anywhere.

Mark:
Been listening to the show for a year now in the Detroit area. Happened upon in just by searching the AM stations (now it’s programmed in as station #1). It’s like reading a good book that you just can’t put down. Great show!!! Very informative. I’ve been a CPL holder for over a year now and I am so glad that there is actually a show out there with my type of mindset. Definitely better than the usual midless drivel on the radio. Keep up the fight!
I love the show.
I am serious about living the armed life style and very focused on constant training.
I find that many fellow ccw permit holders are not interested in continuing to develope their skills and have never heard of your show or the USCCA. I spread the work the best i can, sometimes on deaf ears.
keep up the work.

Finally see the writing on the wall, our Federal Government, every employee and every federal is sworn to uphold the Constitution. Probably every state employee as well. Everywhere the Federal Gov’t gets involved they infringe on the people’s right to be armed. Drive a Government Owned Vehicle (GOV) with a pistol even in the trunk and get caught, you will be fired, maybe even guilty of a felony of some kind.
This is the greatest hypocrisy and violation of the Constitutional Oaths the Federal Civilian Employees are criminals if they carry even with a license, when in land transit or on Federal property. The very government that is obligated to protect our right and Constitutionally obligated to obey “shall not infringe” but subverts our rights every day.
Can this show start and or discuss topic on a regular basis to raise awareness and hopefully get criminal risk of simply exercising our constitutional rights on taxpayer funded properties and structures eliminated?
Having been a former bar tender most bars have gun/s behind the bar . What is the problem?
Mark,
Please encourage them not to let Fast and Furious take this route.

Can someone tell me the song that plays on the show when Marks speaks about the Gun Owners of America?

Heard you and George discussing your favorite gun from Kahr Arms on the 10/30 podcast. I’m sure you know Kahr also owns, along with Desert Eagle, the Auto Ordnance/Thompson line. Check out the Thompson TA5. Can you imagine anything more comforting than a brace of these on the coffe table come the time an intruder kicks aside the boulder blocking the entrance to your cave and invites himself in? Although the name has been previously used, I’m trying to sell my wife on one by calling it “the lady’s home companion”.

Dear Second Amendment Friend,
As the Sheriff of Eaton County, it’s my duty and responsibility to keep our citizens safe and to defend our Constitutional rights. This includes making sure that all public safety issues are effectively, efficiently and responsibly addressed.
Again, I want to make it clear that I do not oppose some of the important parts of SB 59, but I have had many questions that have not yet been answered, despite numerous attempts to get those answers. As a Michigan Sheriff, I believe I have a responsibility to help ensure that common-sense laws are enacted.
Good CPL Legislation protects our 2nd Amendment rights, while helping ensure the public safety with a proper balance in place.
Following are some of my recommendations regarding SB 59:
1. Expand CPL’s from 7-10 years for renewals. (This would save our CPL holders and Sheriffs time and money.)
2. Why not make the CPL permits Full General Permits like they used to be? This would eliminate the need for our CPL holders to have to pay more money for unnecessary “recommended” extra classes.
3. It’s my opinion that drugs and alcohol do NOT mix with guns. The existing restrictions on “not carrying” a gun while consuming alcohol, controlled substances, marijuana or other drugs is important. Such substances can impede sound judgment and put you and the public safety of others at risk.
4. All CPL Updated Laws should be posted on-line by the law-makers who pass those laws and they must be easily accessible by all MI citizens. There’s no need for additional costs to taxpayers for “booklets” and hefty “packets”. All changes or revisions or updates must be provided to every Sheriff and CPL holder across Michigan upon passage and available on-line if they affect CPL holders and sent to MI Sheriffs directly who issue permits.
5. Why not CUT the costs for CPL’s to save applicants money? There is no need for the “middle-man,” i.e., state government, to be involved in the CPL processes. Lowering costs would be beneficial to CPL holders and encourage new applicants.
a. The current cost of a CPL application is $105. Of that amount, currently, the local clerk receives $26, the sheriff receives $15 and the state police get $64. FBI fingerprint clearance could be entered over the law enforcement computers (LEIN) and sheriffs could get that information in a more timely fashion without having to go through a third party. Fingerprints and background checks are handled electronically anyway.
b. The current fee might be reduced to less than half that amount, approximately $50 per CPL permit, for local staffing who handle CPL’s, instead of $105. (That’s “real” streamlining and cost savings for CPL holders!)
6. Why not streamline CPL applications and renewal processes with a simplified on-line application? Since most people have computers to complete applications on-line, there’s no reason why those forms couldn’t be done like that. For those who do not have personal computers at home, there are computers in public libraries. Gun groups might even offer to help those who are not computer savvy, which might encourage new members? Or, CPL Trainers might be willing to allow applicants to use their computers for this purpose as part of their training? (This, of course, would not preclude CPL applicants from appearing before a Sheriff’s Gun Board if requested to respond to legitimate law enforcement inquiries or from appearing in person for the fingerprints that are required. But, only 1 set of prints is needed, NOT numerous sets, as has been the case since CPL legislation was passed!)
7. State Officials must be held to the same standards of accountability if delays, errors or omissions occur on their end, not The Sheriff and local taxpayers. SB 59 holds Michigan sheriffs and local taxpayers liable (civilly and fiscally) for delays that may be beyond their control at the state or federal levels.
8. Also, if local government officials are held to ensuring funds for CPLs are accounted for separately and used ONLY for CPL purposes, why are state officials exempt from those same standards? We have to be careful NOT to legislate double standards.
9. I fail to see the need to have any state department gather personal information or records on CPL holders so legislators can get crime report information. In fact, the Sheriffs, Local Law Enforcement, Courts, Prosecutors, state and FBI already enter information into LEIN for that purpose. There is no need for redundancy or duplication of services for legislative reports! Local Sheriffs could provide an annual report to our legislators or to The Senate Majority Leader and House Speaker on the wonderful successes of our Local CPL Programs.
10. Sheriff’s costs ought to be minimal for CPLs, including processing permits, applications and renewal notifications, etc. The renewal notices are a good idea, but they must be efficient and cost-effective for taxpayers. We want to encourage and work with our CPL Applicants. In an effort to save taxpayers money, I’d prefer to have the option of sending out e-mails or making phone calls to CPL holders when their CPL expiration date approaches, instead of paying the ever-rising postage costs for our thousands of CPL holders.
11. SB 59 gives Michigan Sheriffs sole responsibility for CPLs. If so, we (MI Sheriffs, NRA Trainers, Gun Groups and The MSA) need to work directly with our legislators, without outside influences or unfunded mandates, to ensure that responsible decisions are made and sound legislation is passed. One of the current concerns includes the following: Many offenses are often pled down to lesser offenses, some former felonies are now misdemeanors, some charges or dispositions are not yet entered into the system by others, and the law is changing all the time. It is not wise or safe to compel any law-enforcement official to give a gun to someone who has been a “career criminal”, including those convicted of multiple misdemeanors. This is a very serious public safety concern.
12. It is a good idea to ask that the specific law and rationale for any denial be provided to anyone denied a permit to carry. But, sheriffs and local taxpayers should not be held civilly or financially liable for pending convictions or charges not yet adjudicated or for information missing from criminal background checks beyond their controls. We must make sure that we are protecting the best interests of the CPL holders, citizens/taxpayers and the Constitutionally-Elected Sheriff when they are making every reasonable effort to act with regard for the law and our second amendment rights. There is currently nothing I have found in this bill that protects these aforementioned individuals from frivolous law suits, rogue judges or political gamesmanship.
13. The training completed within 5 years is an acceptable standard for CPL applicants, but, I would also encourage every CPL holder to go out to the range at least once a year to practice. And, if they purchase a new gun, I’d recommend they practice for safe handling and proficiency. The CPL process needs to be one of personal responsibility with public safety in mind.
14. The “arbitrary and capricious” rounds of 98 are not sensible. A friend recently asked, “If you can’t hit the broad side of a barn with 30 rounds, what difference would 68 more make?” But, seriously, I believe this standard ought to be left up to the individual CPL NRA Certified Trainer and the CPL applicant. I don’t think anyone other than those individuals should be the “judge” of a gun-owner’s proficiency on the range.
15. There is no need for the State to “over-regulate” NRA Certified trainers or our CPL holders. The NRA has been doing a fantastic job of training and certifying our CPL holders and they have been for years. I do not want to see the state expand any regulatory government costs or oversight of our NRA Trainers or to increase the costs to CPL applicants or those processing the permits.
16. I agree that there ought to be state-wide uniform processes, forms and CPL cards in place without added costs to our CPL holders, Sheriffs, NRA trainers or local taxpayers. Therefore, who better than Michigan Sheriffs, The Michigan Sheriff’s Association and NRA to ensure that uniformity? There is NO need for any State Department to be involved in the processes or to help push more “unfunded mandates” regulating which vendors, computers, etc. are to be used for processes or procedures handled by local Sheriffs.
17. Changing the CPL Permits to Full General Permits would also encourage individuals to be in possession of their firearm, like they once had to do with a full general permit. Leaving loaded firearms unattended allows for potential theft or for loaded guns to fall into the wrong hands.
Responsible gun ownership is no mistake. And, I think we can get this right, if we work together. I welcome your comments and concerns.
Respectfully,
Sheriff Mike Raines,
Eaton County
