It is the dilligence and awareness of good citizens that best keep us safe from criminal attackers. It also doesn't hurt if you possess the skill, mindset and integrity to carry a defensive firearm. If you can give them your wallet and it be over with, Good; unfortunately you can't always be sure you're not dead one second after giving up your wallet.
